Washing Powder Snow:
This is a simple recipe, messy, but simple. Just use a couple of cups of any (cheaper the better) washing powder and small amount of water until you get a consistency that you can hold in your hand and throw on the tree! Do this outside before taking your tree in of course and before you put lights or any other decoration on. Give the tree enough time to dry and expect some flaking to occur. You may want to put your lights on before taking into the house. If your snow flakes off too much with handling, you can put the lights on first. This is a simple decoration but kids love it! The consistency is trial and error.....but you'll get the hang of it.
Here's another recipe for Snow that sounds great. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks promising! 6 oz Liquid Starch 1 Pound soap flakes or washing powder 2-4 Tablespoon of water Mix the liquid starch, flakes or powder and water. Beat with a mixer until the mixture becomes thick. Add a tiny amount of blue food color (only a drop at a time) until the snow has an icy-blue color. Add white glitter at the last to give a crystalline look. This recipe calls for painting on the mixture.
Stringing Popcorn Garland: Materials Needed: Air Popped Popcorn Needle Thread (dental floss, fishing line, quilting thread) Cranberries optional
Air popped corn will be less messy without the oil. Take 30-36 inch lengths of thread (fishing line is strong, but easy to tangle, also longer lengths are easy to tangle). Tie a large knot 3-4 inches from the end of the string and attach a needle to the other. The needle should be long enough and strong enough to go through the kernel, but small enough to not break it. You will have some breakage, just experiment with different size sewing needles. If you wish you can alternate popcorn with cranberries for a different look. Cranberries can be dipped in liquid floor wax and dried to give them a nice sheen and helps them to last longer.
When you have the desired length, break off and tie a large knot. Tie the lengths of garland together until you have the footage you need. When Christmas is over, hang the garland on a tree in the backyard for the birds!
